Teaching and Learning Committee travel grants

Contact

The Teaching and Learning Committee provides grants for members who would benefit from attending teaching and learning related conferences, fora and symposia.

Overview

The aim of the scheme is to broaden and strengthen the knowledge and experience of committee members with regard to teaching and learning issues, nationally and internationally. As well as providing a professional development opportunity for members, participation in these activities benefits the members' schools, centres and faculties.

Guidelines

The following principles govern the allocation of funds:

  1. It is important that the travel/conference attendance is directly related to one of the Teaching and Learning Committee’s current projects or priorities and it is therefore akin to ‘official business’ travel on behalf of the committee. The committee must guard against the perception of possible ‘special privileges for members’ – especially in times of financial restraint.
  2. Members with travel requests, which are related primarily to their own area of core responsibility, should first seek funding through mainstream budget sources within their school/faculty. This may be more appropriate for members, or invitees, who are on the committee by virtue of their exofficio responsibilities.
  3. A condition of the grant is that a full report be made to the committee upon return. Members are asked to outline the benefits of attending the convention and, where possible, how practical developments may be incorporated into the Teaching and Learning practices at UWA.

Applications

Members should submit a request for support to the Chair for consideration and approval on behalf of the committee.

Grant

The level of funding allocated will be based on the merit of each individual application and take account of:

  • current Teaching and Learning project and priorities
  • perceived benefits to the individual
  • perceived benefits to the Teaching and Learning activities of the University
  • ability of the individual to seek funding from other appropriate sources
  • fair distribution of grants across the range of Committee members.

Up to $2,500 is available for international travel/conferences and up to $1,500 for national travel or conferences.
